Five Word Monologue

Shun, Sacred, Affection, Electric, Breath

Five Word Monologue Challenge by Upsidedownbee.

It was almost like the wind was coming in the window beside my bed powered by an electric fan. I reached up to my right in order to at least pull the shade down so that the breath of nature would not be smacking me in the face, but I was struck by the fact that it seemed very still outside. It was one of those mornings that the aura and the color of the air was yellow in hue. It was almost like the world was jaundiced, and still. Where was the wind coming from?

I decided to throw on a pair of jeans, a sweat shirt and my running shoes and descend outside without even drinking my coffee. Something was calling me outside. I wanted to know what that voice was. It wasn't an audible voice, not one that I could make out anyway. It was more like my heart was being drawn into the sights and sounds and be among the living. This was not normal behavior for me. Although I like going outside running, walking, and digging in the dirt, I am not compelled by an unseen hand to drop everything and journey to the woods.

I grabbed the dog's leashes and with an affectionate pat on their heads we found ourselves on the trail. The air was chilly, the kind of cold that comes in the Fall when Summer is finally on its way out, at least until next year. The kind of cold that puts a little excitement into your bones, as you anticipate the new season. I was surprised that I wasn't even sleepy anymore. It takes me a while to wake up, but I was awake and alert to what I was going to find, if anything.

As we came to the bend in the trail where the creek winds down and snakes across our regular path, I felt a sense of the sacred as another electric fan breeze cascaded across my face. Even the dogs stopped to notice. I decided it was time to stop and sit down on the old abandoned log that was a daily part of our excursion through the woods. I could hear the gentle sound of the creek, the dropping of the many acorns, and nuts as they blanketed the woods all around us. I kept expecting one of them to hit me on the top of the head, but it never did. There were literally thousands covering the trail at my feet. Every once in a while one of the dogs would bring me an excessively large one and want me to throw it like I would toss a tennis ball for them to retrieve. Soon even the dogs were settled there in the woods not really trying to play, run, or hike, just content to sit and wait for me their master. I thought about the times when I shun times like these because of busyness, apathy, or self serving doings. It reminded me of the verses where Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha:

38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. 40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"

41"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, 42but only one thing is needed.
Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

The Spirit had called me, me, why would He call me to go out into the woods, to enjoy the Creators beauty and to fellowship with Him? I have many traits like Martha. I ask Him into my house, I work to put food on the table for Him, and His workers, and then I wonder why He doesn't help me like I expect or envision in my endeavors. How arrogant, and self centered my heart is. But here on this day, He called me to a special time of just delighting in Him. Me, the dogs, and few squirrels, and the God of the Universe. May I continue to listen more to the breeze of your Spirit as He woos me, and draws me, even in the woods.

Breezes/A bit of Fiction on a lazy afternoon

Lying down on my hammock amongst the groves of apple trees, I have been reliving much better times.  Once again I was daddy’s little angel sitting on his lap distracting him from reading the afternoon paper.  He never really minded, he just pretended to be perturbed, as he would tease me about something or other.  The smell of his after shave, the touch and feel of his “salt and pepper” face, and the softness of the look in his eyes have been with me all of my life.

He was assigned to be with the van that led the charge right into enemy territory.  The look of his eyes have never been the same again.  Now a days he sits and stares regardless of what is going on around him.  Mother wheels him through the dinning room of the old farm house and onto the back porch in order to listen to the sweet melody of my brothers guitar as he plays it in the summer breeze.   The notes drift by trying to capture and captivate the memory of the man that was once the center of our world.

Having the chance to reflect on the past has helped me to change my future.  The apples have never looked more juicy, ripe, and delicious.  The wind is blowing in a direction that I thought that it never would.  Father is staring not really knowing any of us, but we owe him the life that he gave us to continually love like he did.  As newness of the breeze makes me feel like life could somehow go on, so I will take this as a sign that even my father may come back to us again.
